Keep calm, you’re moving house!

It’s that time of year again when lots of us are in the process of moving house. After putting our houses on the market in the Spring (because that’s the best time we’re told!) , sales have now been agreed and all of a sudden we’re on the move!

There is a lot to think about when you are moving and the admin involved can be overwhelming – even things like redirecting your post or getting your Sky/Virgin account changed can seem like a real challenge! There is always going to be something you’ll forget so here is a list of the smaller things that you should always remember to do:-

  1. HOME INSURANCE – You must make sure you have insurance in place for the property you are buying. This must be in place from the date of completion. Home insurance is usually a requirement of your mortgage lender but sometimes it can be forgotten about…… we don’t need to tell you how important it is to ensure it is in place!
  2. RATES – Don’t forget to let the Rates office know you’ve moved otherwise bills will continue to be sent out in your  name and you’re not at the property to see them arriving in the post box. You don’t want to be hit with debt recovery action for a debt which isn’t yours!
  3. ELECTRICITY/GAS READINGS – Don’t forget to take readings on the day of completion and phone it in to the electricity/gas supplier. Again, why should you pay for electricity you aren’t using yourself?
  4. AND LASTLY….make sure you re-direct your window cleaner and the dog walker!!!

The day of completion can be a stressful business. Keep in close contact with your solicitor and make sure he or she has given you a full run down of timings  – you’ll need to know when you should have your house cleared, when you should leave the keys with the agent (if you are selling) and when you will be able to collect keys for the house that you’ve bought.

Finally, don’t forget to REMAIN CALM and try to enjoy it!

Good luck to all of you who have impending house moves and of course, if you are thinking of selling or buying and need some advice or an idea of solicitor costs, please contact our conveyancing team who are always on hand to help.
