Police interviews – get a solicitor!
Every person who is to be interviewed as a suspect in a criminal case, generally by the PSNI, is entitled to FREE legal advice for that interview or series of interviews. Many people, however, do not realise that they are actually suspects unless they have been arrested. When questioned you should as yourself if you could be prosecuted as a result of that interview. If the answer is yes, then get a solicitor.
There are safeguards in relation to the procedures that the Police, or indeed all investigators, must adhere to. These are encompassed in The Police and Criminal Evidence (Northern Ireland) Order 1989 (PACE) and the accompanying Codes of Practice. A solicitor will understand these processes and practices and will safeguard the person being interviewed.
