Pregnancy Discrimination – Know Your Rights!

A mother has accepted a settlement of £9,000 from her former employer after she was made redundant during her second maternity leave. The mother alleged unfair dismissal and unlawful discrimination on the grounds of gender and pregnancy. The woman returned to work following her first child to a new role which she was assured was a more secure role. However, months into her second maternity she was informed that she was being made redundant despite two new workers having been employed to do the same work which she had been doing. Her employer initially disputed the claim but eventually settled with her stating that they acknowledged that their “redundancy procedures could have been more robust”.
