Our History
McCartan Turkington Breen was founded in Belfast, Northern Ireland on 1st January 1977. Our namesakes are Fergus McCartan, Bernard Turkington and Damian Breen. The firm was born of a merger between two long-standing and respected firms who themselves were formed through various mergers over the preceding decades.
The oldest precursor firm that runs in the DNA of McCartan Turkington Breen can find its roots as far back as the 1920s. The firm was founded by a team of young and ambitious solicitors who would soon become the sharpest legal minds of their generation. Even back then, our expert legal advice coupled with a straight-forward personable approach, attracted many of Belfast’s leading businesses and individuals.
The most contemporary rendition of the McCartan Turkington Breen story is one of growth. The firm has gone from around ten people in 1977 to almost sixty today. In fact, we are one of largest locally owned law firms in Northern Ireland. We have been involved in landmark cases that had far reaching implications in Northern Ireland, Great Britain and the European Union. We presented cases all the way up to the House of Lords and later, the Supreme Court.
From the outset we have been a full-service legal practice that proudly represents a diverse range of people and businesses. Then, as now, we were a firm that prided itself on excellence in client service. The McCartan Turkington Breen story is one of consistency and we continue to build on our past in order to define our future.
