The Department for Infrastructure are clamping down (pardon the pun) on illegal parking in Belfast. Whilst the majority of urban clearways and bus routes operate on the main arterial routes in and out of the city centre in the “rush hour” between 7.30am and 9.30am and 4.30pm-6.30pm, some operate for 24 hours per day.

From Monday 19th March 2018 drivers who park illegally on urban clearways and bus routes will not only receive a Penalty Charge Notice but their vehicle may also be removed and/or clamped.

The charges for parking illegally are as follows:

  • £90.00 for a Penalty Charge Notice (reduced to £45.00 if it is paid within 14 days);
  •  £40.00 to release the vehicle if it has been moved and clamped nearby (this fee will increase to £105.00 if the vehicle has been removed to the Vehicle Pound in Mallusk); and
  • £12.00 per day storage costs will be added to impounded vehicles for every day they are unclaimed.

The aim of this operation is to try and reduce congestion in the rush hour and to make it easier for everyone to get in and out of town. Let’s hope that everyone adheres to it so that we can all get where we need to be that little bit faster!
