Discrimination in the Workplace
A Police Officer has been awarded over £10,000 compensation by the Employment Tribunal after it was held that the PSNI had discriminated against him for having a beard.
A new PSNI health and safety policy required male officers to be clean shaven. The case focused on whether the policy was indirectly discriminatory towards men as far as the application of the policy was concerned. The officer argued that the policy was being enforced against men but not against women who contravened the policy in relation to their hair. The Tribunal held that the officer was discriminated against contrary to the Sex Discrimination (NI) Order 1976. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-49967676
