Shared Parental Leave
The Work and Families Act (Northern Ireland) 2015 governs the changes being made to parental leave for parents of babies born on or after 5th April 2015.
There will be new Shared Parental Leave and Statutory Shared Parental Pay regimes giving parents more choice and flexibility in how they care for their child while enabling both parents to retain strong links with the working market.
Women will continue to be eligible to take up to 52 weeks of maternity leave and the statutory maternity pay arrangements will not change.
Mothers can choose to end their maternity leave after the compulsory 2 week period from the date of birth. The untaken weeks of maternity leave can be taken as Shared Parental Leave if the eligibility criteria are met. Likewise, Statutory Shared Parental Pay will be the residual amount of statutory maternity pay unused by the mother.
To take advantage of these new regimes the parents must give proper notice to their employer.
